BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY:  This position serves the District by providing both  instructional and consultation services throughout the district.

  • Adapted PE Instruction – develop, plan, implement, coordinate and maintain the adapted physical education program for students receiving these special education services as detailed in their individual programs.
  • Adapted PE consultation-consult with general physical education teacher, special education teachers, special education paraprofessionals and other district staff to support the implementation of the required adapted physical education services as detailed in individual programs.
  • Services may include developmental activities and games, sports, dance and rhythmical movements.
  • Provide observation, consultation and training for PE teachers to modify and/or accommodate the PE curriculum to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.

INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT:

  • select and administer instruments to assess students referred for adapted physical education, work collaboratively with other members of the staff to determine instructional goals, objectives and methods according to the district requirements and in keeping with ARD committee determinations.
  • practice positive reinforcement techniques for short-term and long-term behavioral  support
  • Evaluate and report student progress according to campus and department guidelines in a timely manner
  • Utilize a variety of materials and techniques as dictated by student needs
  • Support the implementation, monitoring and support of assigned physical education program for elementary and secondary schools to ensure efficient and effective instruction
  • Support and participate in meeting the objectives of the campus and department improvement plans
  • design and implement physical education curriculum and or community based adapted physical education instructional programs
  • Plan and implement the district’s Special Olympics program in keeping with SOTX 13 guidelines



STUDENT MANAGEMENT:

  • Attends ARD committee meetings and other staffings / meetings as appropriate to ensure student success in physical education.
  • Recommend appropriate physical education programing within the continuum of services to the ARD committee
  • Assist in resolving parent/student concerns in a timely manner
  • Assist in resolving staff concerns regarding adapted physical education
  • Assist in managing student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook and individual student Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)

 

MANAGEMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE, FISCAL AND FACILITIES

  • Consult with instructional staff, counselors, principals, general physical education teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, other appropriate staff members, outside agencies and medical personnel as appropriate
  • Perform instructional, academic, administrative or committee duties as assigned by the appropriate Department of Special Programs and Services staff
  • Ensure safe conditions for all students in special education who meet eligibility for adapted physical education services
  • Comply with and enforce special education policies and procedures in accordance with TEA
  • Comply with and enforce all Department of Special Programs and Services policies and procedures



Organization Improvement:

  • Organizes materials relevant to adapted physical education for use
  • Provides information, support, and communication with case managers, teachers, parents, and families.
  • Conduct student observations to assess the scope, quality and relevance of services provided to eligible students.
  • Coordinate and implement  transferrable adapted physical activities for life-long health and wellness
  • Contribute to district wide school improvement efforts and the attainment of academic excellence indicators and state performance plan indicators as a member of Department Special Programs and Services.



Professional Growth and Development:

  • Conducts teacher training on adapted physical education, the process to access services in BISD, and follow-up trainings.
  • Keeps informed about new state and federal guidelines and policies concerning adapted physical education in public schools.
  • Seek ways to increase professional growth and development in the use of  appropriate assessment instruments, the district process, and evaluative feedback from supervisors, and professional development programs to improve overall participation and  performance.
  • Provide leadership by addressing challenges facing the profession; pursuing professional development activities; and sharing information with other professionals.
  • Observe professional ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency code of ethics.



School/Community Relations:

  • Conducts training for staff members in order to explain adapted physical education services and processes.
  • Communicates effectively with students, staff, parents, and community by projecting a positive image that enhances the school / department / district mission.
  • Serves as a liaison with community agencies, businesses and BISD.
  • Articulate the District's mission and Special Programs and Services’ mission for adapted physical education services to the community and solicit support in recognizing the mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness of district/community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
  • Project a positive image to the school and the community.

 

Organization Morale:

  • Use management practices that promote collegiality, teamwork, and collaborative decision making among staff members.
  • Demonstrate high expectations of students and staff.

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law as well as local and departmental policies and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of special programs and services for students with disabilities; specifically disabilities that impact participation in physical activities
  • Knowledge of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for the assigned area(s).
  • Knowledge of curriculum design, implementation, evaluation and refinement
  • Knowledge of effective techniques and  instruction for students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of effective techniques and  instruction within physical education
  • Knowledge of policy, procedures, state regulations and federal regulations related to adapted physical education.
  • Strong public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong  communication skills in both verbal and written forms
  • Advanced technical and working knowledge of school district operations
  • Ability to use personal computer and software to develop spreadsheets, perform data analysis, and develop individual education plans
  • Strong ability to collaborate with colleagues to enhance instructional practices
  • Ability to administer SAMA
  • Ability to engage others in collective inquiry and problem solving strategies
  • Ability to utilize multiple student data systems provided by the district
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures in keeping with district and department standards
  • Ability to collect, analyze and use all relevant data to support student learning
  • Ability to coordinate district functions as appropriate to programs



ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Education/Certification:
    • Bachelor's Degree in special education and physical education OR Bachelor’s degree in Adapted Physical Education
    • Certified by the State of Texas
    • Master's degree in special education or Adapted Physical Education preferred
    • Certification in Special Education and physical education (or related field) preferred
    • Current APENS examination (Adapted Physical Education National Standards) preferred

 

  • Minimum Experience:
    • At least Five (5) years teaching experience (combination of PE and Special Education)
    • Adapted PE teaching experience preferred
    • Willingness to pursue APENS examination (if necessary)
