BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY: Under general supervision, provide security/monitoring and protection for students, staff and visitors and prevents property loss due to theft or vandalism. Monitor the safety of parking lots and the exterior of facilities. School hall monitors supervise students and their activities outside the classroom. This include not only hallways, but cafeterias, locker rooms, school grounds, playgrounds and street crossings. Hall monitors help maintain order and report or remove students whose behavior is unsafe or disruptive. They may take attendance and locate students who are on campus but not in their assigned classrooms. Hall monitors issue passes to students who are tardy for class. They may guide students across streets and intersections. They often control traffic when school buses are arriving and departing. Hall monitors greet visitors, answer general questions and give directions. They may ask visitors for identification and maintain a logbook for security purposes. Hall monitors may use a two-way radio for communication.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent and three months or related work experience.
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of district and campus policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic first aid and training in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Skill in coping with a variety of students in varied situations.
- Skill in working effectively and cooperatively with school age children and others.
- Skill in student management techniques.
- Skill in verbal and written communication.
- Ability to follow basic safety precautions.

Student Support:
- Identify students in violation of Student Code of Conduct and report to administrators. Report suspicious activities to school administrator and/or the BISD Police Officers if appropriate.
- Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, discipline issues, and any other issues to the appropriate authority immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible.
- Support students who exhibit distress, conflicts and/or crisis and help get students access to the necessary administrator, counselor and/or teacher to resolve issues.
- Support student behavior utilizing SAMA, student behavioral management techniques, and verbal de-escalation tactics.
- Assist in resolving parent/student issues and concerns in a timely manner.
- Assist in managing student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
Student Management:
- Assist administration in maintaining an effective operation by monitoring the halls and surrounding school premises.
- Monitor and report student behavior and student conduct in relation to the Student Code of Conduct.
- Report conflict or confrontation between students and disturbances to the Principal or Assistant Principal.
- Record data for supervisory staff, such as student conflicts or unusual occurrences.
- Report tardiness, truancies, and other related incidents to the appropriate school administrator.
- Perform other job-related duties as may be designated by the school principal or designee.
- Check for students’ hall passes and tardy slips.
- Escort students to the principal, assistant principal, counselor, liaison officer or nurse.
Campus Safety:
- Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, security doors left un-locked, and any unusual activity.
- Direct authorized visitors to their proper destination; report and monitor unauthorized visitors
Support of Administrative, Fiscal and/or Facilities Functions:
- Monitor middle school school parking lots, outside premises, and school buildings for security.
- Control traffic and parking on campus grounds during school hours and at after-hours events.
- Assist law enforcement personnel as needed.
- Notify campus admin, police, fire department, or other appropriate authority of any situation requiring immediate attention.
- Monitor the school premises by checking students for identification and/or hall passes.
- Identify and escort unauthorized personnel to the front office.
- Communicate effectively with staff, parents, students, and all visitors.
- Give directions or act as a guide to authorized visitors.
- Provide assistance to campuses/departments as requested.
School/Community Relations:
- Interact positively with employees and the community to provide needed information and to promote the District in a favorable manner.
Organization Morale:
- Participate in team building activities and the decision-making process as appropriate.
- Communicate and collaborate with campus/department staff to enhance service delivery and customer satisfaction.
Organizational Improvement:
- Work collaboratively to improve programs.

- Participate in professional development that increases effectiveness and improves District performance.
Other Responsibilities:
- Comply with policies established by federal law, including but not limited to State Board of Education and local Board policy.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
- Work involves moderate exposure to physical risks and unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Work is normally performed in a setting related to an educational environment, but not limited to hallways with moderate exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases, occasional exposure to physical risk and distressed individuals within the immediate work environment.
